Don't feel guilty, Mickey. If it's one of little interest to most people, then that's the only way it's going to get into the collection. I've done that with two books that I couldn't bear to read word for word but thought belonged in the collection. Sort of eye-balling it as I paginated, it didn't look too bad, and my eye did catch a couple of things that the spell-check would have missed--but it looked as if the submitter had done a good job him/herself. The only problem, besides no page breaks, that had been mentioned was charts and pictures, and those I put in the captions for and deleted the garbage that had resulted. Some books aren't going to get into the collection except for people doing what you did--and if a reader wants to do more clean-up, if it's necesssary, he/she can always do it and submit it as a replacement. re Mao's Last Dancer--it's a good book, very interesting, and I think it should be in the collection, and I don't really mind reading it again. I'll probably wait a bit, though. The Speckled Monster is another, rather long but very well-written nonfiction history/biography book that I read a while ago and would be happy to re-read and validate if no one else wants to. The book was so interestingly written that I even read the notes for each chapter at the end of the book, which I rarely do. It's about 18th-century vaccination techniques, before Jenner, called variolation, that stopped smallpox epidemics in Boston and in England despite opposition and disbelief on the part of doctors and politicians, and what the two people who pressed the issue, Dr. Zabdiel Boylston in Boston and Lady Mary Montague in England went through. Here's a brief synopsis from the B&N website to pique your interest. (I think what I'm quoting is short enough to fall within copyright guidelines to be o.k. to quote. smile) "The Speckled Monster weaves a remarkable tale of two heroic individuals in the war against smallpox: Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, the maverick wife of one of Britain's wealthiest men; and Zabdiel Boylston, a Boston practitioner without formal training or a medical degree. These brave ... figures would bring scorn and danger upon themselves, their families, and their associates by shunning the elitist views of Western physicians and embracing a "folk remedy" long employed in Asian and African countries: innoculation...."
