The only thing I found that was helpful was to put them in superscript;
that way I found them esier to spot (I am sighted) when I eyeballed the
pages. When they were bracketed and part of a sentence as was originally
required it was much more difficult to find them ( but now we can put hem
in superscript and it doesn't take any longer than doing them the other way)

Even in a fairly simple book that has footnotes, what techniques seem to
work to make sure that all of the footnote numbers are in the text?
