If what you're getting is a space marker, that just indicates a space
between words. You apparently have "Show all" turned on, which tells you
each marker of any kind. Taking out space markers will run all the words
together-trust me, don't do it!

I use Word 2008 (for Macs), so I don't know how much help I can be. With
what I'm using, if you press CONTROL, hold it, and press the number "8" the
paragraph lines go away. I wonder what it would do for you.
Also, if you press CONTROL, hold it, and press the letter "a" you have
selected the whole document. You can make it all left justified now
(CONTROL, hold it, and press the letter "L"), turn on and off all the
bolding (CONTROL, hold it, and press the letter "B"), turn on and off all
the underlining (CONTROL, hold it, and press the letter "U"), and press
CONTROL, hold it, and press the letter "D" to format the font (I've heard
most people like the one called "Arial"), change the whole thing to type
size 12, etc.

Hi Deb, I'm also getting markers indicating new lines and paragraphs.
Ordinarily I don't see this, but I think I asked to be shown all. Now the
problem is how do I find out how the page is formatted? I don't know how to
do the usual procedures I'd usually do in a document because I don't know
Word 2013. I'm used to dealing with Word 2003. So I'm dealing with that
silly backstage view and don't know how to find out about the font,
paragraph, page setup, etc. I get a lot of buttons but nothing which I can
see to enable me to do what ought to be done if anything. So do I press the
enter key whenever I come to a marker indicating a new line or don't I? What
do I do about paragraph marks in a book? I should also say the scan is
terrific, but I have never encountered this situation before so am unsure

Hi, Kim,
I suspect that you have word set up to show the space marks. This can be
done (at least in older versions) either as your default setup, or (more
likely in this case, unless you just started using word 2013), as part of
the document itself.
Those marks are not actually part of the file, they are just displayed by
word when you set it up that way so you can tell the difference between tabs
and spaces. I suppose in some situations, like proofing, they could help
eliminate subtle errors that might otherwise be the dickens to find.
