Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but in JAWS, once the cursor is focused on the character in question, press NumPad5 if using Desktop Layout or CapsLock+Comma if using Laptop Layout three times quickly. By default, this announces the ASCII value of the character. If you want to hear the hex value instead, in the Configuration Manager, check the Speak Character Value in Hex box under Text Processing.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Finding the special characters code number

Hi,

I am sorry I know that this was on the list once over the last month but I can't find the message with the information in it.

I am trying to find out how to determine the code number for a special character. It is an umlaut which is not in the default character list. I know that there is a way to go to the letter and press a key combination to identify the Unicode number but don't remember the proper key combination to identify it.
thanks for your help,
Dixie
