Oh, bless you, Mayrie!  That is it!  I need to save this one for posterity.  
With a new hard drive and Office load, this was the perfect time to change all 
those preferences.

For those in Word 2007, type ALT F
word options
proofing
AutoCorrect Options
AutoFormat As You Type
and change that and any of the other autoformat items you wish to not invoke 
like (quotes, fractions, hyphens,, bullets etc.)
