Hi Pratik,

Could you tell me, please, how to identify an m-dash using Kurzweil 1000? I have never heard such a thing actually spoken when using K1000,or seen it represented in braille on my braille display, and am concerned that I'm doing something in some way that I shouldn't, or am not seeing something that I should. Here is my experience. I very often see in books hyphens where I believe a long dash is what should be there. I have been changing them by hand by adding an extra dash where appropriate. Should I be doing something differently? When I look at the text in braille, or listen to K1000 read it, I see a hyphen, and K1000 actually says "dash," not "long dash" which it does say when there is actually a long dash, or what looks in braille like two hyphens next to each other. I don't know whether the books are scanning accurately or not, as I can't just look at the page without scanning it first. I want to do whatever is correct. Is what I've been doing acceptable? Should I be doing something else instead?

Thanks so much for any clarification. I'm sorry if I'm not being as clear as I might be, or if I'm asking what seem to be the same questions asked previously. If you would like, and for clarity's sake, I could search out examples of the things that I have been changing. Thanks again for your wisdom.

Peace,
Mayrie

Hello,

Whenever possible, you should use/keep the m-dash or long-dash symbol. Some volunteers will differ on that opinion.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Dash et al

I got behind on reading mail and confused about the previous discussions. Should I?

1. Globally replace all long dashes with double dashes?

2. Are double dashes the same as double minus signs? Are double dashes the same as double hyphens?

2. Leave them alone.

3. Do something else.

Thanks,
