Dear Sarah,
We're, uh, I, am keeping you busy this afternoon, but I'm having a good
lesson.
I just wanted to agree with you about the bold and italicized words. As a
former public school teacher, and now as a perpetual student, though not in
a school, I can attest to the fact those font changes appear with careful
forethought by the author and editors. Often key vocabulary words appear in
bold print and are a kind of study aid, grabbing the reader's attention and
making quick work of skimming. The italics often convey emotional content,
internal dialogue and inserted subordinate or clarifying information.
I notice more glitches in the books I download in braille than the auditory
versions, but, mistakes and all, I am glad to get the braille.
The thing is that Bookshare is a gigantic resource even though it's a work
in progress. It has evolved so much in 3 years, I have no doubt it will
continue to be refined glitch by glitch, and it's very cool that our
experiences as users and volunteers contribute to the improvements.
Sarah, that last paragraph wasn't meant for you in particular. It was just
me, being new and still emoting over the emergence of a resource for braille
books I'd thought would never exist in my lifetime. I'm bound to simmer
down sooner or later - grin-
Always With Love,
Lissi

That is bad if the italics cause trouble in the braille file, because
removing them is not okay. Sometimes bold and italisised words are very
important to know about and it is wrong to deprive someone of that
information just because it annoys you. I'm not saying that it is
processed correctly, which should make it easy enough to read in braille,
but if that is the case the system should be worked on instead of telling
validators that they should remove that information. I'm certainly not
going to because either I don't know that things are bold or italisized
because I don't have my software set to tell me about it, or I do have it
set to tell me about it and that is because I found that knowing was
useful in that particular book and therefore might be useful to someone
else.
