Sometimes I read the subject lines and sometimes I don't. I am more prone to read them after such a request. However, it is a lost cause. Subject drift is ubiquitous over all email lists. No matter how much you ask people to change the subject lines they will still drift. Some people will do it while others will not. Getting them all to do it is, to use an oft used analogy, like herding cats. The simple fact is that if you use subject lines to determine whether you read the message or not you will miss a lot of messages that you would be interested in and you will read a lot of messages that you are not interested in. Anne has said before that she uses the subject lines for that purpose because she is subscribed to so many lists that she get hundreds of emails every day. I think that rather than filtering by subject line the better solution is to unsubscribe from some of them. Yes, that can be hard to do because you would not have subscribed to them in the first place if you had not been interested in the topic, but you have to draw the line somewhere. My suggestion would be to give it some thought and decide which email lists are the least valuable. One criterion can very well be how much topic drift there is in a specific list. You might also want to consider which ones have the most off topic messages too. But then cut some. Unsubscribe to something. Then you will have the time to read the email you do get. Telling everyone to change the subject line to reflect the topic of the thread, though, is, again, an exercise in herding cats.
