You might try closing the book in whatever you are using, opening the book in wordpad, don't change anything, but save the book with a new file name. Open the new file in whatever you have been using to proof the book. Wordpad tends to eliminate any formatting characters it doesn't have rules for, so this might eliminate your characters that do weird things.
