I heard my backyard chickens cackling late yesterday afternoon. I stepped outside to see an immature Cooper's pacing back and forth atop the short pen, peering between the slats of the taller pen. It always looks like a desperate hawk when you see them chasing a foot, and is usually an immature. I wish her well, but not that well. The chickens and I got over it rather quickly, as I let them out for their evening run as usual. I have also had an immature Red-tailed hawk perched on the pen lately, once when the hens were out. At that time they had ducked into the tomato cages, but I believe the hawk had not made a pass at them, just considering it. The only attack I have witnessed was by a feral cat, which was promptly dispatched by the rooster.
