It is not as hot as they predicted it will be later… but all the hype has made
me lazy :-). I’ve been sitting in the shade near the house, watching the
woodlot across the road, with the scope focused on the top of a dead hackberry
tree. It grew in a low, wet, spot and consequently drowned during a wet spell.
The old favorite oak-snag, that has been so productive, is looking tired and I
expect it will soon come down completely. Anyway, this hackberry has taken
over as the choice place for birds to sit. Just this morning, I’ve counted a
Summer Tanager, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Great-crested Flycatcher, Mourning Dove, E.
Starling, Common Grackle, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Cowbird and American Robin
there.
I posted fuzzy photos of the Tanager, Pewee and Great-crested, along with a
short video of a Blue Grosbeak that was singing in top of the post oak tree,
right in front of me (last of four links, below).
