I was finally able to get to the Sloughs.
I was going into withdrawal!
The Ohio has crested and started a fall. At one point water is
flowing from the Ohio directly under 268 into the Sloughs. All the
impoundments are full. Wood Tract is flooded up to 268. Water has
been over the gravel road along Gentle Pond. Pond Creek Marsh is
inaccessible due to water over the road. Water is flowing over the
gravel road from Muddy Slough near the Shorebird Unit. Water has been
over the dike at Hardy Slough but has now fallen so that it is
flowing over at only one point. Tram Road is under water.
8:30AM to 12:30PM
temp in the low 50s. overcast. occasional very light mist, eventually
light rain started.
Highlights:
Pied-billed Grebes: 20
Great-blue Herons: most I've seen since fall
Canada Geese 20
Mallards
Gadwalls
Green-wing Teal
Blue-wing Teal, outnumbered other ducks
Am. Widgeon
Shovelers
Wood Ducks
Ring-necked Ducks
Com. Goldeneye pair
Hooded Merganser
Red-tailed Hawks
Bald Eagles: 1 Adult on nest, 2 imm. at Wood Tract
N. Harrier at Hardy/Muddy Slough
Am. Coots everywhere in rafts and singles; outnumbered all other
waterbirds combined
Killdeer
Greater Yellowlegs 15
Lesser Yellowlegs 3
Barred Owl calling at noon
Belted Kingfisher
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Tree Swallows
Winter Wren
Brown Thrashers everywhere singing
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Field Sparrows
White-crowned Sparrows
White-throated Sparrows
Fox Sparrows 10
And at home this morning a Chipping Sparrow calling in the yard.
Yesterday under the feeder White-crowned Sparrows, the first this year.
