Observed an adult male lawrence's warbler on Friday (June 6) at the Fishtrap Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Pike County. The bird was singing the blue-winged warbler song. A blue-winged warbler was "playing" chase with the lawrence's for the 10 minutes that I observed them. The habitat on this particular chunk of the WMA has been shaped by fire for the past 10 or so years. Apparently, workers were burning a floating debris pile on the edge of the lake and wind pushed the fire into the forest and uphill into some exposed coal seams in the hillside. The coal seams are still burning today and periodically sparking new fires(?). The resulting habitat is part savanna and part shrub/sapling expanse. Savanna species such as red-headed woodpeckers, summer tanagers, and bluebirds are present as well as the expected shrub-dependent birds like prairie warblers, etc. Today (June 10) heard and observed a swainson's warbler on Fishtrap, specifically along Lick Creek, which borders Route 1373.
