The Melco flood retention basin shorebird list now numbers 19 in two
weeks thanks to the addition of Wilson's Phalarope. Yesterday's list
included 1 Semi Plover; 20+ Killdeer; 4 Greater Yellowlegs; 25 Lesser
Yellowlegs; 1 Solitary Spiper; 1 Spotted Spiper; 15 Pectoral Spipers;
6-8 Semi Spipers; 10-15 Least Spipers; 1 Baird's Spiper; 12 Short-billed
Dowitchers; 4 Stilt Spipers; and 1 Wilson's Phalarope. A couple of days
ago there were 11 Black Terns.

The Falls of the Ohio also hosted some shorebirds yesterday evening
despite the presence of one of the local Peregrines. Observed were
several Semi Plovers; 20-25 Killdeer; 2 Greater Yellowlegs; 1 Lesser
Yellowlegs; 2 Spotted Spipers; 1 Solitary Spiper; several Least Spipers;
10-15 Semi Spipers; 6 Pectoral Spipers; as well as 6 Caspian Terns and
an Osprey.

Arrangements have been made to visit the Melco basin on both Saturday
and Monday mornings of the upcoming holiday weekend. On Saturday, I will
be there from 9:00 a.m. to noon EDT; on Monday, Jane and Pat Bell will
be there from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. EDT. As in past group visits,
participants should shoot to get there no earlier than the appointed
time because there is little parking outside of the gate. Also, if you
have to arrive late or leave early, be sure to close the gate behind
your vehicle upon both entering and departing. Also please hang the
chain through both sides of the gate to help keep the wind from blowing
it open. Remember that the gate will be locked behind us in the
neighborhood of noon on Sat and 10:00 a.m. on Monday.

The Melco basin is off Grade Lane in southern Jefferson County. From
Fern Valley Road exit off I-65, go west to the second traffic light
(Grade Lane) and turn left; proceed down Grade Lane just past the first
traffic light (Crittenden Drive) to the small paved turn-in that is just
beyond the concrete bridge that is just beyond the railroad tracks that
are just beyond Crittenden Drive.

Small groups from the club have been visiting the Melco basin a couple
of times each week. If you cannot make the trips this weekend and would
like to visit the site, please contact me via email to see when
additional informal trips might be taken to the site.
