Matt Stickel, Jeff Sole, and I returned to Morgan County today in hopes of seeing the Evening Grosbeaks. We patiently waited for about 2 hours and finally had 3 birds (a male & two females) come down to the feeders at the Elam's for 10-15 minutes from about 1130 to 1145. After feeding they flew off to the west. The wait was highlighted by an appearance by a Merlin over both the Elam's and Angus's yard; it perched in the top of a large oak tree next to the latter's yard before streaking off to the northwest after something. Dave Svetich, Tom Barnes, Mike Flynn, and Lou Shain were also present for the visit by the grosbeaks. On our return from there, we birded for awhile at Cave Run Lake. The notable highlight was a White-winged Scoter not far out from the Clay Lick Boat Ramp. Other birds at the lake and Minor Clark Hatchery were quite similar to those reported by Brian Wulker yesterday and included a large group of beautiful Redheads, a pair of Northern Pintail, and about a dozen Green-winged Teal. The Bald Eagles are incubating on the far side of the lake from the tip of Twin Knobs.
