It is good of you to call Burger King, Brainard. Their slogan is or was “Have it your way”, so tell them you want a hamburger with an intact purple martin roost. Sorry to hear about the destruction of their temporary roost trees, but the inadvertent removal of invasive callery pears is a plus for the environment (timing, however is everything). Perhaps birders in the areas with these roosts can shop local businesses and let them know that they came to watch the birds. Getting more burgers sold might have made the company a little more tolerant of the “nuisance”. University of the Cumberlands) at Williamsburg in southeastern KY checked on the Purple Martin roost there last evening and provided the following report. I will call Burger King today and at least make sure they know the martins are *not* blackbirds and that they will leave within a month. How ironic that people cutting down trees can refer to saving the area from "all the damage" being done by the birds .... I'm sure it's messy under the trees for a couple of months, but come on ..... bpb, Louisville -----Forwarded Message----- From: Bret Kuss Sent: Jul 30, 2014 10:05 PM Subject: RE: Williamsburg Purple Martin roost Just got back from Williamsburg. When I arrived there around 7:30 there were plenty of birds (martins) circling high over town near the old mall on Hwy 25 and briar creek park. later the birds moved toward the opposite side of the interstate and settled near the tractor supply store parking lot in a couple of large trees in the open, and on powerlines. There were still plenty of birds in the air. Later they all took to the air and moved toward the Walmart across hwy 92. I think an estimate of 10,000 martins would be a very crude approximation. When I drove over to the Walmart parking lot I could see they were trying to settle into an area of dense small trees adjacent to the Buger King drive-through. There was also a small starling flock roosting in the Walmart sign there, about 200 ft from where the martins were settling in the trees. There were guys from the Burger King trying to cut the trees down with chain saws while thousands of martins were trying to settle in them. Their persistence in trying to land in the small clump of trees while the chainsaw was working was impressive. When I drove over there and talked to the workers they mentioned that they had already cut down the trees on the opposite side of the Burger King parking lot because of all the damage the birds had caused. The ground where they were cutting the trees was well covered with bird droppings. The trees they were cutting were bradford pears. I'm not sure if all of the trees they had been roosting in were bradford pears also. It was getting darker and I left a little after 9:00.
