Mark Monroe and I were out in west KY this week. Highlights included the following: July 22/24: 3 Common Loons on Kentucky Lake just above the dam (1 in alternate plumage). July 22: we saw a single adult Scissor-tailed Flycatcher at the KY 453 site north of Grand Rivers with what appeared to be a full grown juvenile bird sitting next to it on a wire west of 453 at last year's nest site. We guessed that this indicated that the birds did, in fact, get off a nesting somewhere nearby. We could not find these or others on our pass back through the area on July 24. July 23: it was a good thing the Painted Bunting was still singing away at his usual territory, because otherwise the lower Hickman bottoms were pretty darned boring. Nice weather with a north breeze probably had many shorebirds moving, in part explaining the overall lack of birds on the few spots of habitat present. It appears to me that Black-necked Stilts have abandoned what few areas they were in earlier in the month as they have all dried up :o( July 23: although the Ohio River has played tricks on nesting Least Terns again this year, inundating nests in recent weeks, the nesting site at Middle Bar, Hickman County, was thriving with a number of birds incubating/brooding and some small chicks visible walking around and maybe 100 adults in the air. July 24: with 75-100 Ring-billed Gulls in the vicinity of Ky Dam was a very molty first-summer Laughing Gull on the lake above the dam. July 24: Sinclair WMA/Paradise ash basins: 1 Miss Kite; the main ash basin had 6 spp of shorebirds including a Short-billed Dowitcher and 2 adult Western Sandpipers along with the commoners. bpb, Louisville brainard.palmer-ball@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
