I did my yearly survey of the Boston area last Sunday in search of breeding grassland birds, although it was a brief one missing some territory, but I found a few things. Unlike last year I detected a Dickcissel on Shady Lane which was nice though he was a ways off the road as well as heard some bobwhite in the same vicinity, but whether they are wild stock or introduced is anyone's guess. Over near the intersection of 52 and the Bluegrass Parkway there was a large wet field that produced a single Great Egret, first time I think I've seen one there. However, while looking for signs of Willow Flycatchers over by the Beam Distillery Lake, I noticed a couple of people in their car staring uphill through binoculars, and when I followed their line of sight I found myself staring at a pair of adult Bald Eagles, which I was not expecting at this time of year. I don't know if they nest nearby or if they are visiting from some more distant location, but I would be curious if anyone knows. I made a brief stop off at Cedar Grove and nearby Valley View Golf Course at twilight and only detected a few Blue Grosbeaks and some Purple Martins, though a single Chipping Sparrow was behaving very savannah-like and had me going till he popped off the ground. Oddest misses were vireos and I was hoping to find Horned Larks or grassland sparrows( savannah, grasshopper, henslow's.)
