Charlie Crawford, Eddie Huber, Mary Yandell, and myself revisited Union County
today in search of shorebirds and were not disappointed. The best spot was
actually a flooded field (pools receding after recent heavy rains from Isaac)
off KY 141 near Waverly, Ky. Our list included 45 American Golden-Plovers, a
juv. Black-bellied Plover, a Willet, a Ruddy Turnstone, a Sanderling, a
White-rumped Sandpiper, at least 3-4 Baird's Sandpipers, several Western
Sandpipers, 15-20 Stilt Sandpipers, 2 Short-billed Dowitchers, and a
Buff-breasted Sandpiper. Commoners on the list included Semi Plover, Killdeer,
both yellowlegs, Pectoral Sp, Least Sp, Semi Sp, Spotted Sp, and Wilson's
Snipe. Other birds of interest included the season's firest Savannah Sparrows,
a few getting-late Cliff Swallows, and a variety of dabbling ducks including 16
Northern Pintail.
