Matt Stickel, Steve & Teresa Graham, and I had intentions of looking for
shorebirds in southern Christian County yesterday, but by mid-morning it was
apparent that numbers and diversity of them were lacking, so we switched to
Plan B ... looking for returning songbirds at Pennyrile State Forest.
We birded Morgan Pond and surrounding bodies of water including Swallow Spring
Pond but could only find common species, and not in that great a number.
Highlights included a couple of Semipalmated Plovers and an American
Golden-Plover at Swallow Spring. Waterfowl also included only common species,
although 3 Redheads and a Ruddy Duck were on Morgan Pond. A few American Pipits
were also flying around. Trees around the area were full of Palm Warblers, with
several Yellows and a singing Tennessee.
At Pennyrile, we drove the sort of loop road around the state resort park that
runs thru the Pennyrile State Forest. Over the past 10 years the Div. of
Forestry has been removing patches of non-native pine, which has resulted in
many early-successional areas that were crawling with Prairie Warblers. Most of
the other warblers were also nesters including a couple of Blue-wingeds and
Black-and-whites. Migrants were limited to small numbers of Yellow-rumpeds, a
few Palms and Nashvilles, and a couple of Black-throated Greens. Other nesters
included Worm-eating, Parula, Yellow-throated, Pine, Common Yellowthroat,
Kentucky, Ovenbird, Hooded, and Chat. Also saw both tanagers. On the day we had
the four widespread nesting vireos, plus a single Blue-headed.
We also went to Union Grove Ave. north of Dawson Springs where we added
Louisiana Waterthrush and Protonontary (for 20 warblers on the day), and an
early Eastern Wood-Pewee.
Matt & I ended the day at the Sinclair Unit of Peabody WMA where highlights
included performing American Woodcocks, a singing Chuck-will's-widow, and
several singing Henslow's Sparrows.
