Couple of follow-ups to Brainard's post. Woodcocks returned last night (after vanishing for a week) to the tree nursery behind my home and were again displaying. I've realized an artifact of the quiz photo made me goof at least one of my duck ID's (and explained why it looked funny), but my overall list of guesses remains the same. Also, I finally heard back from the Bird Banding Lab regarding Northern Saw-whet Owl recaptures from this previous fall. Captured a total of 91 (89 new) during October/November. 1 Young Female recaptured on Oct 29 was from Port Rowan, Ontario, first banded on Oct 12. 1 Young Female recaptured on Oct 30 was from Lakefield, Ontario, first banded on Oct 7. 2 birds that we first banded this season were also sadly later recovered. One was found dead as a window strike about 1.3 mi west of the banding site in a sub-division 2 weeks after it was banded. About 3 weeks after it was first captured, another bird had returned north approximately 30 miles where it was hit by a car on a highway in Scott County, Indiana, and later died from its injuries. This 'rebound' back north was a notable pattern this year with many recaptures across the eastern US.
