There has been VERY little action at the Melco flood retention basin in
southern Jefferson County, but all that changed yesterday. Rand Falls and
Michael Autin both happened to check it last evening after work. I got a call
from Michael at 815 to tell me that there was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper there
and that 10 Willets had just dropped in. I got there after sunset but was able
to see the Willets before Michael, Brian DeVore, and I watched them fly off to
the northwest about 900 pm. The Buff-breasted was photo'd by Rand and
constitutes (as far as I am aware) only the *second* one ever documented in KY
during spring. Folks will be checking Melco daily during the spring shorebird
season. Anyone interested in trying to schedule a visit can email me off
listserv.
