Sunday, Sept. 23/Land Between the Lakes Boyd's Landing highlights: Adult Lesser Black-backed Gull on water in company of a Ring-billed Gull. Also, 50 distant scaup spp., 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches, and 6 American White Pelicans. Kentucky Dam/Lighthouse Landing: We watched as 50+ Broad-winged Hawks thermalled up (from roost site in the area?) north of the cell tower and streamed south. Not sure how many were in the group; the hawks were still appearing when we left. Saturday, Sept. 22 We found Fulton County very dry and fairly bird-less. We did see a skein of 250-300 DC Cormorants from the entrance road to Obion. Later at a vegetation-overgrown Lake #9, saw several high-flying lines of American White Pelicans (350+ total birds) headed towards the Mississippi. The Army Corp. is hard at work on a series of levee "relief wells" along Sutton Road east of boat ramp 8. We also saw a backhoe working to remove a line of trees, making its way back and forth through a blanket of smoke from a burning brush pile.
