Kelly McKay and I covered the sliver of the Mermet IL, CBC that includes some
of northwestern McCracken County yesterday. The section includes the northern
portion of West KY WMA and some farmland towards Crawford Lake that is north of
KY 358.
Yet ANOTHER dreary, chilly CBC day. Also, the entire Ohio River floodplain was
already inaccessible due to recent rains and subsequent flooding. As a side
bar, I don't think I've ever seen as much water below KY dam, *perhaps* only in
May of 2011?? It appeared that there was only about 10 feet of headwater flow
spilling over the gates. I heard from a local that they are closing the gates
to try to lessen downstream flooding, which is going to take Kentucky Lake and
Lake Barkley well up over summer pool.
Anyway ... we tallied 70 species. Highlights for me included a Sedge Wren (on
the West KY WMA, where we sometimes get one on the Ballard CBC), lots of
Red-headed Woodpeckers, an Eastern Phoebe, some flyover Lapland Longspurs, and
Purple Finches at a few stops.
