Several people were curious what I did about the Brown-headed Cowbird nestling in the Carolina Wren nest on my back porch. I typically don't fool with nestlings; not going to admit that I will take the occasional cowbird *egg* out of a songbird nest. One time I did take a cowbird nestling out of the nest of a Bell's Vireo, but I think I turned it over to a rehabber friend of mine (it was almost ready to fledge). The nestling cowbird in the wren nest fledged yesterday, several days ahead of the Carolina Wren nestlings. This was nice, because it had moved from the back of the nest to the front and I had started worrying about the wrens. Now the parents are able to feed their young without having a big huge mouth blocking them. It was funny yesterday evening because after fledging to a nearby shrub, the cowbird was smart enough to realize that the parents kept going to the nest to feed their young. Several times it ended up back on the porch, I assume trying to get the attention of the parents (who I'm sure continue to feed it as well). At one point it was on top of the back screen door at a similar elevation to the nest box. I was amazed that a newly fledged youngster could be so aware of its surroundings. I guess this is just another reason why cowbirds are so successful. Anyway ... I placed a few pics of the cowbird nestling on my Flickr stream at this link (two more to the left of this one): https://www.flickr.com/photos/70381922@N08/14738987866/ BPB, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== When posting on BIRDKY, please close posts with your first and last name and your address (city or county). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To post on BIRDKY, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS website at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos/default.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS Photo Page to view photos of birds recently sighted in Kentucky: http://www.flickr.com/groups/kentucky_ornithological_society/pool * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison.
