On Goose Lake, approx. 500 Scaup, probably Lesser, did not have scope and they
were pretty far away, say 600 ft. from the hwy out in the lake. Even at that
distance as soon as you stop they swim the other way.
One Short-eared Owl vicinity of S-2, around one mile away, also one Northern
Harrier. This was around 1630 local time. Also one Red-tail Hawk. We do have
one pair of next to top Zeiss binoculars.
One Bald Eagle sitting 100 ft. behind the nest, at the end of road swamp. It
did not move a muscle.
Then, earlier, after lunch, in our back woods on the farm we had two
Red-Shoulder Hawks, very vocal, Tarzan movie vocal. We were doing some work on
the back boundary for two hours and the distant hawks entertained us most of
that time....Pileated Woodpeckers, very vocal, but not seen in our woods this
afternoon, too.
This morning I was using my nice size spiral bound Sierra Club planning
calendar and noticed for March they have one of best Painted Bunting pictures
and it was photographed at Peaceful Waters Sanctuary, Wellington, Florida. I
immediately looked that location up. It is a 30 acre wet land just north of
Boynton Beach and west of the FL Turnpike. This is not far north, 10 miles.
from one of our top places-Green Cay Wetlands. This is close to where we will
be in late spring. There are ballfields near Peaceful Waters so you know how
Burrowing Owls like ballfields and sandy areas, plus another Painted Bunting
site that will be a "do not miss," this coming trip.
One spectacular thing I did not mention the other day about the Miami Zoo. The
Zoo has a pair of Harpy Eagles in two large cages with a connected flyway. Two
years ago they had chicks, two, in Jan., with a camera on them..not too bad.
Next closest Harpies are in Panama, not a sure thing, plus Costa Rica is
rumored to have, but remote and no guarantee.
We have seen Scarlet Macals many times in the jungles of Mexico, west of Vera
Cruz in the El Abra Range, when we were searching for new caves. SM also common
in some sections of CR....CARRARA, sp....but, not in Muhlenberg Co.
