Dave Roemer and I did the Olmstead CBC yesterday, December 17. We were prepared to postpone if the weather had been foul. Since the weather was about as nice as could possibly be expected in December, we decided not to hold out for an even better day. Our species total was 63, about average for this count. We had two count firsts - a Barn Owl and 3 Northern Pintails. A previously untried dead-end road yielded 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches, seen on only one other Olmstead count. A couple of other sightings were especially enjoyable to us - a dark morph Red-tailed Hawk and a very large mixed flock of Grackles, Red-winged Blackbirds, Cowbirds and Starlings working their way across a grain field close to the road. Several sparrow species were absent or down in numbers, probably due to the drought caused, low weed seed crop. Multiple new stand-waters failed to yield us a snipe. Too recent, I guess.
