27 December 2005:
3 birders in 2 parties and 1 feeder watcher participated in the 13th
annual Olmstead CBC this year. Very warm weather (up to 63 DF) and
southerly winds as strong as 20 mph most of the afternoon reduced
overall numbers had keep many individuals from posing for the birders.
Nevertheless, the count was a complete success with a record 75 species
recorded.
Count firsts included:
1 Greater Scaup (Lake Herndon)
1 Red-shouldered Hawk
1 Red-breasted Nuthatch (Lake Herndon)
Species establishing all time high counts or typing all time high counts
included:
Greater White-fronted Goose: 2
Wood Duck: 5
Gadwall: 4
Mallard: 184
Black Vulture: 39
American Kestrel: 33
Barred Owl: 2
Belted Kingfisher: 6
Pileated Woodpecker: 4
Eastern Phoebe: 4
American Crow: 156
Ruby-crowned Kinglet: 4
Eastern Bluebird: 71
American Robin: 260
American Pipit: 580 (shattered old record)
Rusty Blackbird: 110
Purple Finch: 7
Other nice birds and/or numbers included 850 Horned Larks, 12 Lapland
Longspurs, 171 Canada Geese, 2 Hermit Thrushes, and 1 Brown Thrasher.
Misses or birds low in number included the absence of Winter Creeper,
Sharp-shinned Hawk and Great Horned Owl, only 9 Killdeer, only 1
Wilson's Snipe, only 1 Eurasian Collared Dove, only 3 White-breasted
Nuthatches, and only 7 Field Sparrows.
