The Olmstead CBC was held today. As has been true for the past several
years, Frank Lyne, David Roemer, and I formed a single party of 3
observers. Results were dampened by the weather, in terms of
precipitation, warm temperatures, and morning southerly winds. As a
result individual numbers and species numbers were low. Only 58 species
were recorded, the lowest number since 1995. There were no "new'"
species recorded in the count, nor were there any "rarities".
Highlights consisted of the following species recorded in the highest
numbers ever in the 11 year history of the count:
Wild Turkey: 52; all in one "flock" (what is the term for a group of
Turkeys?)
Great Blue Heron: 9; exceeded the previous record by 1 bird.
Killdeer: 105; mostly in 2 large groups.
Eurasian Collared-Dove: 34: 25 at one farm in Olmstead, 1 in
Russellville, and 8 in Allensville.
American Robin: 211
American Pipit: 185: including 150 in a single grouping in an alfalfa
field.
Yellow-rumped Warbler: 45
Other highlights included: 2 Wilson's snipe, 140 Cedar Waxwings, and 1
female Purple Finch.
Misses included: Northern Bobwhite, Great Horned Owl, Red-headed
Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, Brown Creeper, Winter Wren and Lapland
Longspur (had been observed 4 consecutive years.)
This report reflects tentative numbers with a couple of feeder watchers
yet to report. Substantive changes are not expected.
