75 American White Pelicans were huddled down against a strong cold wind at
Jonathan Creek embayment Feb. 22. Gadwalls were lined up along the opposite
shore but too far away and too much wind to count. Two Green-winged Teal
and two Bonies floated in a more protective bay (Clear Creek). No peeps.
While doing my obligatory Feb. paddle Feb. 23, I came upon a dead Common
Loon floating in Wildcat (Blood River). There were no visible signs of
trauma. Two Forster's Terns and 5 Bonies sat on a sandbar along with three
Herring Gulls and Ring-bills. Four Buffleheads, 4 Horned Grebes, and one
Pied-bill Grebe cruised around the bay.

Another paddle afternoon Feb. 24 at Jonathan Creek revealed at least a
hundred each of Gadwalls and Pintails plus N. Shovelers and 30 Ruddies.
Turning my kayak home at sunset a big flock of House Finches flew into the
tops of trees along the bank. They sounded like parrots!! I pulled under
the bridge between Aurora and Hardin where the Cliff Swallows have their
mud nests. Amazingly, the finches started darting in and out of the nests
finally finding one that suited their fancy and I guess are there for the
night? No peeps.

Could not locate the Say's Phoebe. I last saw it Feb. 16.

Full moon is beautiful.
