Subject: Shrike antics
When we have a Loggerhead Shrike around, as we have lately, I've gotten into
the habit of scanning a small Hawthorn tree that they sometimes use for a
"larder". The long thorns are great spikes for storing bits of food for
later. It is fairly rare but when I do find something, it's usually a bird
wing, but twice I've found a bird's head; a picked-clean skull, impaled on a
thorn through the eye socket. The old books sometimes referred to Shrikes
as "Butcher Birds" and I certainly understand why. This morning I
discovered an 11-12 inch Garter snake hanging in the Hawthorn! It is
impaled through the body, just behind the head.on a thorn. It apparently
got in the mood for an outing, during a warm afternoon and ended up as
Shrike food. Most of the snake's head is missing, but otherwise it's all
there. I have a few photos that I'll email to anyone interested in
something unusual (.I'm afraid I'd get scolded for posting non-bird photos
at our usual Flickr location).
