This summary (below) of the Reelfoot Lake CBC on the miserably rainy Saturday comes from compiler, Mark Greene. Ken Leggett, Nancy Moore, Gary Pogue, and myself covered the Kentucky sliver of the count area that included the Long Point Unit. Our highlights/limited contributions to the list from KY included a soaking wet Merlin I saw early in the AM; at least 10 Least Sandpipers on a wet area (now that sounds weird in that *everything* was wet!) between Stateline Road and KY 2134; and lots of Lapland Longspurs and American Pipits. We got most of the dabblers including nice numbers of Northern Shovelers, Gadwall, and American Wigeon. Geese were mostly on the TN side of Long Point and the wad of Snows on Saturday probably contained 5K or more birds with nearly that many Greater White-fronteds around and 10s of thousands of Mallards; we picked out a couple of Ross's but couldn't find a Cackling. The waterfowl are not especially easy to see from the Long Point tower this year because of tall vegetation in many of the management units. bpb, Frankfort -----Original Message----- From: Mark Greene [mailto:greenesnake@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, December 17, 2007 12:20 PM To: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Reelfoot Lake CBC The 2007 Reelfoot Lake Christmas Bird Count was conducted on Saturday, December 15. The theme for the day was cold, rain, and wind. The temperature range for the entire day was 38-41 F. The rain was steady all day ranging from a light mist to a steady drizzle to moderate downpour. It only stopped raining briefly for a few minutes late in the day. The wind was pretty brisk all day long making the cold rain sting against our cold faces. Despite the weather obstacles, 12 cold & wet observers were able to dig out 109 species for the day! This total was much better than I had anticipated when I could hear the rain beating down against the window before sunrise! This was however our lowest species count since we had 109 in 1998. Total numbers for most species were down, some considerably so, but I attribute that to the rain and wind as much as anything else. Here are some details & highlights: The best birds: White-eyed Vireo (3rd count record) Red-necked Grebe (4th count record) Lincoln's Sparrow (7th count record) Merlin (7th count record) Barn Swallow (found by Mike Todd on Friday could not be relocated on count day but a nice count week bird nonetheless!) Other notable species: Ross's Goose, American White Pelican, Least Sandpiper, American Woodcock, Barn Owl (2), Short-eared Owl (2), Red-breasted Nuthatch, House Wren, Sedge Wren, Marsh Wren, American Pipit, American Tree Sparrow, Lapland Longspur (1000+), and Brewer's Blackbird. The biggest notable miss was 1 Ol' Coot who was a little under the weather. Other misses: Red-breasted Merganser, N. Bobwhite, Turkey Vulture (seen count week), Cooper's Hawk (seen count week), Herring Gull, Pine Warbler, Western Meadowlark, and Purple Finch. Observers were: Jerry Drewry, Bob Foehring, Mark Greene, Joe Guinn, Ken Leggett, Gail King, Nancy Moore, Brainard Palmer-Ball, Chris Sloan, Joe Stone, Sabin Thompson, and Mike Todd. Thanks to all the participants for another successful Reelfoot count and for braving the elements! I'll post all the totals for the count once I get them totaled.
