Doug,
Your note about the chipping sparrow made me think about one I saw last
week in my back yard. It was eating dandelion seeds, hopping on the stem to
bend the head of it onto the sidewalk, then stomping on it to release the
seeds more easily. Clever! I had never seen this behavior before. Thought
others might enjoy hearing about it too.

While I was lunching at a picnic table in our backyard, our FOS Chipping
Sparrow foraged the lawn between our home and the suet trees. My notes
show last year's arrival to be during the week of April 5.
We still have many Pine Siskins, Goldfinches and Juncos at the feeders and
cracked corn patches.
