[birdky] Big Sky Birding

Eleven intrepid Kentuckians recently returned from a glorious week of birding
in western Montana. With a great deal of assistance from Montana resident
Denver Holt (the speaker at last fall's KOS meeting), the group was able to
find 186 species of birds, 25+ species of mammals, and lots of wildflowers
among some spectacular Montana scenery. For those who are interested the
following were some of the highlights:
May 24 Missoula and vicinity Swainson's Hawk on nest, Lewis's Woodpecker,
Red-naped Sapsucker, and American Dipper
May 25 Rattlesnake Canyon, Sula, Lost Trail Pass, and Lee Metcalf NWR
Vaux's Swift, Cassin's Vireo, Macgillivray's Warbler, Calliope Hummingbird,
Wilson's Phalarope, and Yellow-headed Blackbird.
May 26 Blackfoot WPA, Choteau, Pine Butte Swamp Barrow's Goldeneye,
Sandhill Crane, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Upland Sandpiper, Long-billed Curlew,
Rufous Hummingbird, and Mountain Bluebird.
May 27 Freezout lake WMA, Priest Butte, Choteau, Glacier NP
Western Grebe (courtship dancing), Clark's Grebe, American Avocet, Red-necked
Phalarope, Franklin's Gull (nest colony), Golden Eagle, Ferruginous Hawk,
Prairie Falcon, McCown's Longspur, Chestnut-collared Longspur, Sprague's Pipit,
Mountain Goat, and Grizzly Bear.
May 28 Glacier NP Boreal Chickadee, Three-toed Woodpecker, Varied
Thrush, Townsend's Warbler, Harlequin Duck, and Great Gray Owl.
May 29 Glacier NP, Charlo, Ninepipes NWR Chestnut-backed Chickadee,
Red-necked Grebe on nest, Short-eared Owl (courtship flight), and Long-eared
Owl.
May 30 Polson, National Bison Range Northern Pygmy Owl, Red Crossbill,
Gray Partridge, Black Swift, Lazuli Bunting, Bison, Bighorn Sheep, Elk, and
Pronghorn Antelope.
May 31 National Bison Range Blue Grouse
All in all, a great week of birding in spectacular surroundings with fine
company!
