I try to disturb Red-shouldered Hawk as little as possible, but it was sitting
on the pole by the barn as I returned from my morning rounds. Having to walk
that way, I snapped a few pictures and happened to catch it taking flight. When
I got home, I found Alison taking her morning laps around a path in the yard. I
told her about the hawk and about how earlier our dog Bridge was merely trying
to prove Einstein's statement that speed increases mass when he ran into me and
knocked me off my feet. As I talked, I thought I saw a vulture in the distance,
but realized when it set its wings, they were straight out from its body. I ran
back in for my binoculars, saw that it was an eagle and that it was headed our
way. By the time I ran back in and fetched my camera, it had passed overhead. I
was still able to get a shot of it before it disappeared in the distance. 2
