[birdky] BKY: Birding the Anchorage Trail

Cold temperatures and beautiful blue skies have greeted us as we birded the
Anchorage Trail yesterday and today. On both days we have seen a really pretty
Kingbird. This is the latest we have ever seen this bird on the AT. On Sunday a
nice find was a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (FOS for Jane). There were still lots
of Cedar Waxwings feeding on the wild grapes and honeysuckle berries.
Swainson's
Thrushes were also found in the grapevines. Seven species of warblers were
added
to our list - Redstart, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Tennessee, Wilson's, Parula
and Black-and-White.
Today birding with Judy Galitzine one of the first birds we encountered was a
Red-breasted Nuthatch. A Barred Owl was sitting in a tree very close to the
path
near the first big bridge for those of you who are familiar with the trail.
Other notable sightings include Pied-billed Grebe, Gray-cheeked Thrush,
Red-eyed
Vireo, Rose -br. Grosbeak, and 6 species of warblers - N. Waterthrush, Cape
May,
Nashville, app. 6 Common Yellowthroats, Chestnut-sided and Magnolia.
On Saturday birding with Carol Besse we discovered an immature Red-headed
Woodpecker, only the second record for the trail.
