I've been pretty silent on this email exchange, but I do feel there are things
that we can do as individuals.
I only mowed my yard about 3 times this summer, much to the shagrin of Gail.
I've showed her every email about native plants (& mowing). I have also
realized that I have several junipers, etc that need to go.

This has been a great chain of emails and I really like the direction the
discussion has moved toward! As most of you know I work for TNC. We have
several nature preserves in the KY River Palisades, where I know several of
you occasionally go to bird. Sally Brown Preserve, Crutcher Preserve, Dupree
Preserve, etc. There are often times when TNC has volunteer events or needs
volunteer s to help with projects at these sites. I forwarded a couple of
your emails to Chris Minor (TNC Director of Land Management) and Sallie
Carter (TNC Marketing) to let them know you might be available for some
volunteering to help improve bird habitat at these sites. I suggested we
figure out how to link the ASK Facebook / Web page to TNC’s so the word gets
out when there is a need for volunteers to help TNC do good things at these
preserves.

Yes we can, and we will.

Thank you for everyone's insightful involvement in this lively discussion.
The group is better off because of exchanges like this. Even when our
preconceptions are challenged it can broaden our understanding. I know mine
certainly have been challenged. There are many educated, conscientious,
members in the group. Surely we can learn from each other.
I also hope this type of discussion acts as a motivator for conservation. We
all care about conserving the habitats we have and restoring those we don't
yet have. Let's put these strong feelings for conservation to good use. I
want the group to be involved in these type projects officially (as a group).
But until those projects have wings, please get involved with other local
groups doing good work (CKAS, TNC, Reforest the Bluegrass, town projects for
habitat, ect.). If you know of any volunteer opportunities, please inform the
rest of the group. Those of you with more of an advocacy skill-set, lead us
in discussing conservation issues with our local elected leaders.
walk slow,
Mark
