Played hooky from work today and birded Osceola Island at South Holston Dam. Lots of good species including: Winter Wren 24 Cedar Waxwing 140+ American Robin 500+ Yellow-rumped Warbler 54 Blue Jay 14 White-throated Sparrow 18 Tufted Titmouse 8 Pileated Woodpecker 2 Great Blue Heron 2 Sapsucker 3 Red-bellied Woodpecker 2 Northern Cardinal 8 Song Sparrow 11 Field Sparrow 6 Bufflehead 41 American Widgeon 7 Mallard 9 American Coot 2 Rudy Duck 1 Wood Duck 1 Belted Kingfisher 2 Gadwall 1 This is a new personal record count for winter wrens on the Island. My previous high count was 11. Several cats have been turned loose and the Island and one was trying to help my by stalking the Winter wrens. I tried to think of a way to repay him so I gave him a free swimming lesson. He caught on right away and was able to swim the entire width of the river. Although I have to admit he looked less than grateful when he reached the other bank. I’ll try to motivate him to practice his new hobby every chance I get.
