The nesting colony of Cliff Swallows at Emmitt Bridge, just below the weir dam on the South Fork Holston River in Sullivan County, TN had 375 nests 13 May 2000 (Coffey). Birds have nested there back into the late 90's. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- bristol-birds] Re: Cliff Swallows return a.. From: "Mary J. Date: Sun, 15 May 2005 21:53:40 -0400 Today while birding at South Holston Lake, I counted 201 nests of the Cliff Swallows under Avens Bridge in Washington County, VA. This makes the colony one of the largest in the state and the largest in Southwest Virginia. Also along the lake in Washington County I had a Forester's Tern in nice breeding colors and a Red-breasted Merganser. The tern allowed me to float within 20 feet of it with a boat while it rested on driftwood. Great fun. Let's go birding...... The side of the bridge facing west has about 280 nests that look freshly built. The east side has about 170 nest that are older. I cannot say how much older. They are dry looking and only one or two birds visited the nests while I was there compared to the east side that was a constant wave of fury. I am surprised no one from Bristol has ever posted Cliff swallows here and even more surprised, if the eastern nests are from last year, that I have not spotted the birds in the past. The top left shot is the 'older' nests. The main shot is the western side of the bridge, as is the lower shot. As you can see in the lower shot (notice the dark brown line under the railing) all available real estate on the bridge is taken. Don Carrier
