Recommendations please? Our English teachers for sophomore American
Literature  are searching for a few summer reading books that would explore
similar themes to those in The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.
Voice, how perspective changes understanding, and destiny/choices are the
key ideas.

It does not have to be about dogs. The goal is to give students a choice in
their summer reading selection, but have them explore related themes.

Other parameters:
Similar length - 300 pages or so.
Must be American author with predominantly U.S. setting or characters
Diversity a plus (author and/or characters)

Thanks so much for any ideas!

Mei
