Little Fires everywhere springs to mind! Celeste Ng. As does Parrotfish
(Wittlinger), and Love, Hate and Other Filters (Ahmed).
All are great diversity picks and destiny/choices is a massive theme in
each. The last two have the advantage of being very directly talking to
teens about their own choices.

Recommendations please? Our English teachers for sophomore American
Literature are searching for a few summer reading books that would
explore similar themes to those in The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth
Stein. Voice, how perspective changes understanding, and destiny/choices
are the key ideas.
It does not have to be about dogs. The goal is to give students a choice
in their summer reading selection, but have them explore related themes.
Other parameters:
Similar length - 300 pages or so.
Must be American author with predominantly U.S. setting or characters
Diversity a plus (author and/or characters)
Thanks so much for any ideas!
