Quite a few of the high schoolers at my school (10th -12th) have connected
with *When Breath Becomes Air *by Paul Kalanithi. This was mostly
pre-COVID-19 so I'm not sure if this would be too traumatic to read the
middle of a pandemic.

favorite, about being the NYT restaurant critic in the 90’s. Amazing
descriptions, but also tackles issues of sexism, ageism, and her
mission/struggles to introduce food from non-white cultures into the public
eye. I taught it for years in my creative writing class.
