When we got our shelving I was extremely lucky to discover our County Law
Library was going digital and we purchased their beautiful, solid oak,
thick(!!) shelving at a much reduced rate. Then, to complete our shelving
needs, I found that Demco was able to match those shelves with the best price
for solid wood. I don't have the metal shelving with wood ends, so don't know
about pricing on those, but the Demco rep was very helpful. His name is Randy
Korte in case he still works there.
To complete our "look" I got York School's old oak library tables when they
were doing a remodel. I repaired where necessary, refinished, put wheels on
them, and they're still going strong! Yes, I did the work myself. Thanks to
baisl for that lead. Reduce, reuse, recycle!
Good luck!Gail McCredieMt. Madonna School

am working on a proposal that our stack area be remodeled.  Both the Principal
and the CFO support the project, but they aren’t making any promises until they
see the total cost estimates, and look for money.  I contacted the vendor that
I used in 2006, Rod Froke with Brodart, and learned that he had retired, and is
now managing an independent book store in Marin County.  He recommended Robert
Schmidt at Ross McDonald.  I have met with Robert twice, and am pleased with
his interest and professionalism.  I am proposing to eliminating our all metal
floor to ceiling shelving and replacing it with 48” wood casework with metal
shelves.  In order to prepare for this, I must eliminate 1/3 of the regular
collection.  I am working in the 300’s now, and it is a piece of cake because
we have such things as AIDS books published in the early 90’s and volumes about
the every naval battle since the beginning of time.  As long as I remember that
this is a research library for high school students, the weeding is easy.  When
it comes to visual arts, it will be impossible.  Of course, if I weed enough in
social science and other disciplines, I can keep most of our art books.

Subject: [baisl] Library shelving    (apologies for cross-posting) I am at the
start of a library remodel that includes purchasing new bookshelves. Our
current shelves are all metal and are not particularly attractive. I want to
buy either all-wood shelves, or wood casework with metal shelves, but probably
not veneer. I'm interested in hearing what vendors people have used in recent
years and how the shelving has held up. If you have done a remodel in the past
few years please contact me - I have questions and you probably have answers!
Thanks - Cathy
