I am in the middle of this too. But I chatted at length with a few people
about it during CSLA. My biggest takeaway was to not put two popular
genres next to each other, as that will end up being one very crowded part
of the library.
I have used colorful bookmarks to mark my books as a first step - which
has already helped with generating interest in my population.
I am hoping to keep fantasy and sci-fi apart, but it looks like I might
have too small of a sci fi collection to do this, so that is under
advisement right now.
I have low circulation, so I am only going to put genre labels on my books
for now, and will only change call numbers if circulation picks up
enormously, but my friend with an elementary school had to change her call
numbers, and had a fun time printing out and putting on just the change to
the first part - eg F DES became RF DES (romance fiction) etc. Lots of
little R's :) to save printing the whole label.
