Love this thread--so many great ideas to connect with our students! As
Christina mentioned, our personalized reading list program has been a
fantastic way to build relationships with students. Basically, Christina or
I interview a student using a prepared set of questions about books they've
loved, hated, or thought were meh. We ask about her or his hobbies,
interests, etc. Then, we collaboratively come up with a list of seven book
recommendations along with reviews and bullet points on why we chose the
book. All in all, the interview takes about 45 minutes, but I've found
that the connection that is created during that time lasts throughout the
year, and beyond.
