I'm sure Paul already knows this, but the NGC catalog numbers are in order of increasing R.A. If the NGC number is larger, look to the left (east) on the chart; if it's smaller, look to the right (west). Of course you still have to scan the chart up and down in declination to find it. For example, if you're on a chart that shows NGC 4384, and you want to go to NGC 4486, it will be along a strip of R.A. to the left (east) of it on the chart. I know...
