Early morning observers may be interested to know that a
supernova has been found in the bright galaxy Messier 61 = NGC 4303.
The discoverer, according to the Central Bureau Electronic Circular,
K. Itagaki in Japan using a 60cm telescope + CCD. The position is
given as: 12 21 55.3 +04 29 17 (J2000), noted as being 5".5 east and
51" north of the galaxy center. [The CBET lists both directions
as "north", obviously a typo, but recoverable using accurate coords
for the galaxy nucleus.] The magnitude is estimated as 14.9 and 15.0
by two observers. Since this is rather early in the observing season,
it could be that the supernova erupted during solar conjunction,
and is now fading. We'll have to await a spectrum to determine this
unless there is a rapid brightening in the coming day or two.
Nearby supernovae usually get quick attention, so it may not be
necessary to wait long for spectra, despite the (US) holiday.
