My wife’s car is a 2017 Ford Explorer. (3.5 liter turbo,w/ 4wd) Like I said, I
looked in the user’s manual and couldn’t find anything in it about disabling
the “exit illumination”. I also Googled for it and didn’t find anything useful.
(Doesn’t mean much as I could be using the wrong magical search term.)

BTW, IF the Explorer has the same electrical philosophy as Mazda, since Ford
built all our Mazdas, the design structure was changed over 15 years ago
(we've had Ford and Mazda pickups since the 1980s) and made the dome lights
"lifetime", meaning dealer access only so I've used either a red gel or
rubylith covering with painter's tape, or a suitable Tupperware container
with a rubylith cover that fits over the dome fitting. I tried my old trick
of pulling the interior lighting fuse on newer trucks, but around 2003 Ford
tied them into the fuel injector circuit, and if you pull the fuse, the
engine computer reads it as a fuel injector fault whether or not the key is
installed, and disables the computer. It takes a pricey reset of the
computer to start the engine again. Not fun at the the old Farnsworth Ranch
events.
