Paul,
I believe that Ford considers the “exit illumination” to be a safety feature.
So there doesn’t seem to be any easy method to turn it off. But I think (Hope!)
that enough painters tape and towels will make it acceptable to the other AASP
attendees.
In the meantime, anyone have a recommendation for a good red flashlight? The
Celestron one is pretty useless for me. I can’t see anything with its light.

Michael,
I haven't read all the replies yet, but I have a Ford Expedition and have
only one problem with the lights. There's a dimmer switch which disables the
dome lights when turned past it's click stop. BUT, Ford in it's infinite
wisdom turns on the parking lights and "puddle" lights under the exterior
mirrors whenever a door is opened. The only solution I'm aware of is to
leave one door cracked open all the time. Then lights stay off on subsequent
openings, and you can avoid pulling fuses if the door remains unlatched.

Subject: [AZ-Observing] Light pollution at AASP?
My last worry about attending AASP next month is light pollution. Not the
kind in the sky but the kind that comes off my laptop’s screen. Or worse yet,
the dome lights on my car.
I guess for the laptop I could throw a beach towel or something over it to
keep the stray light to a minimum. People might think I’m being antisocial
though sitting there with a towel over my head.
The dome lights on the car (Ford Explorer) are a bigger problem. Looking in
the manual, I don’t see any way to turn them off. They’ll come on each and
every time I open the door. And since I’ll be sleeping in the back, I’ll have
to be able to get in and out. A beach towel won’t work in this case. Should I
make sure there’s a big RV parked between me and the viewing field?
So what do people do to control the stray white light that everything seems
to emit?
