[AZ-Observing] Re: Bylas, AZ lighting along US 70

I drove through the area at night a while back after a SAC tour at Mt.
Graham. The highway was "well" lit up with the low pressure sodium
(yellowish). I don't know the effect on viewing the stars because I didn't
stop to look up, but I would say that the lighting was flooding the whole
highway with yellow light. Yes, they are full-cutoff fixtures, but putting
enough light downward creating a full lit up area, like they do at stadiums,
would generally have a big effect on the star viewing in the immediate area.
A few miles away I don't think one would be bothered if they didn't look in
the direction of the highway while looking at the stars.

But, I would say: What a perfect example of "overkill lighting". Generally
the low pressure lighting on streets every 200' is excellent, with no glare,
but it has that yellowish light that some people think is not bright enough
for security, even though they are actually better for security because of
the non-glare and non-hot spot effects.

My two cents worth,

Rick,

SAC
